Describe each of the step of the journey to someone who is unaware of the Hero's Journey concept.

Step 3 / 4 - Refusal of the Call and Meeting the Mentor

  • The third step in a hero's journey would be the refusal of the call. This is where the hero would first disagree about completing a certain task. This being that he is afraid or not up to the task at hand. In which after the hero would come to a realization that the task at hand would become important to him later on. The fourth step would be where the hero would meet their mentor. Someone to help the character guild through their task, such as giving them knowledge or providing them with assistance of some sort. The mentor is someone who in term "have seen it all" and is typically older and wiser than the main hero. (118)

Provide an example from a television show/movie/book story line that is an example of each step of the journey.

  • When he was approached by a Russian boss' son named Losef Tarasov about buying his car, John denied selling the car to the son. In which the son got angry at him for not selling the car. After John was attacked at his house and Losef stole his car, he would then get an assistant and important information from an old friend Aurelio. Upon finding out who stole his car and killed his puppy, John finds out that Losef is the son of a crime Russian boss Viggo. After talking to one of his allies, John then visits Winston, an old mentor of his and was asked to stay in his hotel called the "continental". Winston would then provide John with weapons and other forms of assistance and aid to help him accomplish his task. Winston would as well give John good advice about how things should be done without breaking any rules. (153)

Describe a situation in your own life where you have experienced these steps.

  • In a situation that is similar to this in my own life was when I decided to not study for a test. This was when I didn't understand the proper materials to study for the subject and didn't ask for any help. This is when I realized that not studying for the test and asking for help would result in failing my class. I decided in order for me to pass and get a good school was to have a tutor. That tutor was my version of a mentor. Miss T would teach me technique that would help me understand the material better and get a much deeper understanding. (109)

Describe what it was like for you to complete these steps, despite any difficulties.

  • The task was somewhat easy to complete. When it comes to studying new things my knowledge and understanding of the topic is new to me. The reason for it being a difficult task for me was because I don't have a different viewpoint of how the topic was taught to me in the first place. When A mentor is face to face and taught one to one, it gives me more confidence and understanding on what is being taught. Once having more understanding and learning from that mistake can help in the long run. (94)

What did you learn about yourself as a result of this experience?

  • I learn a lot from this experience, for example having a mindset of why the task is difficult from one perspective can help you grow from it. It's ok to have failure in your path [to success and that is what learning is about. Learning from others such as mentors can help you understand their point of view, and yours as well. It's important for you to be denied a certain task but understanding why is very important as well. Asking for help and aid can help you be more successful and confident in your version of a hero's journey. (100)
